If you ask anybody that is passionate about scrapbooking, they would agree that the art of scrapbooking is Creative Therapy!

On Tuesday October 2, 2018, the South Bruce Tourism Committee met with Kathleen Heron the owner of The Scrapbook House in Mildmay and learnt all about her new business.

Kathleen moved here from Toronto and purchased the house (where The Scrapbook House is currently located) at 16 Peter Street South in Mildmay in 1999, that the Municipality had for sale. This building comes with some unique history as it use to be a convent for the Sisters of Notre Dame until 1982 and then half of the downstairs of the building became the County Library on the left side of the house and the Municipal Office on the right. There was a lot of renovations that needed to be made to make this building to have it up to code for a retail business.

Kathleen stated that as a young child, she was always very artistic and spent endless hours after school at the Rec Centre in Toronto adding her creative touch to woodworking pieces, fashion arts, sewing and anything else that she could grab onto it and have won various trophies for her pieces of art. She was also a PSW and absolutely loved the work, just not the hours. If you recall, Mildmay did have a scrapbook store on the main street, until Patti decided to retire. Kathleen taught scrapbooking workshops for Patti.

With her creative touch and passion for scrapbooking, Kathleen decided after Patti retired to open up her own business. The Scrapbooking House officially opened on May 12, 2018 and you can find more than scrapbooking supplies. The retail store also sells bags, journals and jewellery. If you would love to try scrapbooking but you don’t know where to start, Kathleen has created different themed kits that comes with everything you need and then you are well on your way and can let your creative juices start to flow. Scrapbooking is a great way to relax, a perfect project for indoors in the winter and a great way to preserve and display pictures of loved ones and memories that you treasure. Another option is to make various homemade cards for birthdays, anniversaries, get well, and the upcoming Christmas season.

Kathleen continues to offer workshops and classes on scrapbooking both during the day and evening. Her retail hours are: Tues – Fri 10am – 5pm and Sat 10am – 4pm, Closed Sundays and Mondays. You can check out The Scrapbook House on her Facebook Page. Kathleen said she has had customers come as far as Windsor to come to her store for supplies! She is hosting a Scrapbooking Workshop called “The Crop” on Sunday October 14 th at the Mildmay Carrick Complex. You need to pre-register for this event and can do so by calling 226-454-2002 or e-mailing kathleenthescrapbookhouse@gmail.com.

If you are a scrapbook enthusiast (and even if you’re not), if you haven’t already, you need to check out this neat business that can offer anything you need – if they don’t have it, Kathleen will try hard to get it! Preserving memories, one scrapbook at a time!
